Parallel compression / New York compression / Invisible compression
Parallel compression, "invisible compression" or "New York Compression" is a technique which allows to bring a phat sound to your drums track without vanishing the dynamic.
Example
- Dry sample :
- Wet sample :
- Download the project :
Soft format Fichier FL Studio 6.0 flp [tuto] parallel compression (fl6).zip Reason 3.0 rns [tuto] parallel compression (rsn3).zi
What is this made with ?
Basicaly, parallel compression double the drums track and compress one of these tracks.- The compressed signal will bring a phat sound.
- The original signal will keep the dynamic.
Step by step
- Group all your drums tracks (kick, snare, etc) into one track
- Double this track ("splitter" in Reason, "effect send" in classic DAW, or just copy/paste it in other DAWs)
- Compress one of the tracks with those parameters :
- Short attack time (1ms to 10ms)
- Halk-a-kick-time for the release (around 100ms for 120bpm)
- High compression ratio (20:1)
- High gain (quelques dB)
- Mix both the tracks to keep a warm and dynamic sound
This technique can be used with other kind of sounds, synths, etc.
