Parallel compression / New York compression / Invisible compression

Parallel compression, "invisible compression" or "New York Compression" is a technique which allows to bring a phat sound to your drums track without vanishing the dynamic.

Example

  • Dry sample :
  • Wet sample :
  • Download the project :
    SoftformatFichier
    FL Studio 6.0
    flp
    [tuto] parallel compression (fl6).zip
    Reason 3.0
    rns[tuto] parallel compression (rsn3).zi

What is this made with ?

Basicaly, parallel compression double the drums track and compress one of these tracks.
  • The compressed signal will bring a phat sound.
  • The original signal will keep the dynamic.
All the stuff is to mix the two tracks to get a phat and dynamic sound.

Step by step

  • Group all your drums tracks (kick, snare, etc) into one track
  • Double this track ("splitter" in Reason, "effect send" in classic DAW, or just copy/paste it in other DAWs)
  • Compress one of the tracks with those parameters :
    • Short attack time (1ms to 10ms)
    • Halk-a-kick-time for the release (around 100ms for 120bpm)
    • High compression ratio (20:1)
    • High gain (quelques dB)
  • Mix both the tracks to keep a warm and dynamic sound

This technique can be used with other kind of sounds, synths, etc.
